How to apply patch to ESXI 6.0

I have an ESXi box back at home, that I run a couple of servers on… you know, dns, dhcp, vpn, nas, headless torrent.. the usual 🙂 I’ve been running it since version 3.5, off course I’ve been patching and upgrading it, but in that time between patches, i have always forgotten how to apply patch to ESXI 6.0.

Now, i have decided to write it down, for me and for all of you that suffer from not-writing-stuff-down-ness.

So, first we need to figure out what version ESXi we have. I’m doing this in terminal, so fire up you favourite ssh client and connect to your ESXi machine.

once you’re in, run the following commad, which will tell you the version and the build number

vmware -vl

vmware -vl

vmware -vl

the output should look something like this

Now go to https://my.vmware.com, and register, if you haven’t already.

Now find the available patches, or just click here: https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/patch#search

mywmvare

myWmvare

Select your ESX and version and click Search

Find your build number. I have one patch to apply.

What I did was download the latest zip to my computer, then transfer it to updates folder on my datastore. You can upload files to your datastore via vSphere client or just scp them to /vmfs/volumes/datastoreName/folderName.

It’s probably smart to enter Maintenace mode now

vim-cmd hostsvc/maintenance_mode_enter

Once the files are on the datastore, take note of the files’ location and check their profiles

esxcli software sources profile list -d /vmfs/volumes/507f1028-82ab3bea-c3db-0019dbf3459f/updates/ESXi600-201510001.zip

Name                             Vendor        Acceptance Level
——————————-  ————  —————-
ESXi-6.0.0-20151004001-standard  VMware, Inc.  PartnerSupported
ESXi-6.0.0-20151004001-no-tools  VMware, Inc.  PartnerSupported

We’re going to update the standard profile, which will update everything, whereas updating with vib argument will only update certain program.

esxcli software profile update -d /vmfs/volumes/507f1028-82ab3bea-c3db-0019dbf3459f/updates/ESXi600-201510001.zip -p ESXi-6.0.0-20151004001-standard

Thats it, you can then check the installed vibs with

esxcli software vib list

now, reboot, and after its done, exit maintenance mode

vim-cmd hostsvc/maintenance_mode_exit

and check the version and build again, just to be sure. It should be different than before

vmware -vl
